Gardening Goodness

summer vegetable garden 2011
I had so much fun in the sun on Saturday!  I may have gone a little berserk buying tomatoes.  It doesn't look like it, but there are 19 varieties of heirloom tomatoes in that flat, plus 4 peppers, both sweet and hot, 4 eggplant, 3  unusual winter squash, and one run-of-the-mill cilantro.

After the plant sale I came home and worked on the yard - mowed, trimmed, weeded, collapsed.  Oh it was a good collapsing though!

Yesterday, it started raining again of course!  We did manage to get the new tomato beds built.  I put down cardboard and we put the wooden frames over that.  Then I filled them with Mel's Mix.  (If you like to garden, sign up for the my square foot garden newsletter!  She sends you email and tells you what to do in your garden each week for the area you live in!  It's cool!  Do it!)  Um, where was I?  Oh yeah, filled them with peat moss, vermiculite, and compost.  You can see in the photo what looks like a big gap.  I did fill that in on the inside with cardboard.   I plan to create a border around the beds using gravel or something, which I'll pile up a bit to cover the gaps.  The veggies will need to harden off for a couple more days, and the sun isn't scheduled to come back out until Wednesday.  So that's when I'll plant.

I never did get to that pile of fabric.  That was a good guess, Lalie, about the napkins.  Close, but not quite:)  You will all have to check back on Wednesday to see what I'm doing.  I'll have a little tutorial for you!  See you then!

  1. Oh yum! It's just been so darn cold up here...last year, we gave away 4" tomato plants to friends at church for Mother's Day. This year, my seedlings haven't even sprouted their first true set of leaves. Your garden box looks great!

  4. I'm thinking tomato and lettuce with mayo on multi grain toast. And maybe a sweet pickle on the side.
