Ah! Late summer....when an old woman's fancy turns to corvids. That's the way the saying goes, right? Or did I get that confused again?
I really wish I could be one of those artists who show you a new painting every week, but I'm just going to have resolve myself, once and for all, to the fact that I'm not that person. I will show you what I'm still working on.
This is the one I started last week. I started with several layers of a bright green. On top of that I used acrylic medium to put down a piece of vintage pattern paper that I had drawn letters on with walnut ink. I distressed that layer and then added some Golden Fluid Acrylics Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide, as a glaze. I love this paint, and the red iron oxide as well. They give such earthy depth.
I made a stamp with a wine cork and stamped blue over the right side. Then I started blocking in what is to be a playing card.
I've taken the distressing to another level! Now I'm gouging holes in the art board! I held my breath while doing this, afraid of making a gouge too far. He's going to have a marble in his mouth.
I like to sketch in the images before I paint. I feel I have more control with the pencil and I like to be in control. I think I've mentioned this. But I don't see it as a problem;) Oh, sorry, side tracked again. Well, one problem with using the pencil, is if I'm not careful I end up smudging graphite all over my painted areas, and then I have to repaint. Tsk tsk.
But I keep doing it anyway.
This is where I am now. I've started to fill him in with some color. I will continue to add more detail to the large crow, tidy up the playing card again, and finish that crow. He's the Joker card. And I need to remember to fix that paper at the bottom.
In addition to the marble in the crow's mouth, I have a couple more 3 dimensional pieces I may include.
What are you working on this week?
oh, i LOVE this crow! i love watching him emerge from your thoughts.
ReplyDeletei am working on driving my #3 child out to ohio tomorrow (and all of her belongings). her bedroom here empty, except for a few pieces of furniture. she's a grown up now and on to the rest of her life.
i am sad and proud and happy.
our #4 goes back to college next week, and soon after that, my studio rehab picks up again. and then we'll have to see what i really will be working on. very good question bobbi.
i admire/am inspired by your daily devotion to your art.
Thank you, Karen:) Oh! empty nests so hard to bear, but yes proud of our young ones when they spread their wings!
ReplyDeleteI am tired of making jewelry and stitching after getting ready for Craft Lake City. I got my Sketchbook Project moleskin in the mail today, so i am working on a series of small collages for it--entitled "Nightime Stories" should be fun to work in a different medium...I would love to go out and shoot some photos, my new schedule starts in a week, when do you have free time??
ReplyDeleteHi Bobbi,

I am LOVING it! The card, the main crow...the palette!!
ReplyDeleteGreat composition too. And you know, I'm just not that person either. I can't produce and complete on demand something new everyday. My attention span doesn't even hold that long!!
I think you are doing quite admirably.
Oooh, I'm really liking this Bobbi!! I like to draw with the graphite too. Sometimes what I do is spray some fixative on it after I've sketched midway to keep it from smearing. I also like to add more pencil sketching afterwards too. I can't wait to see this finished!
