In the Studio - wips

Just a quick post today to share my mess-making activities with you!  I will be sans car for the rest of the week, so I need to go run errands today.  That means grocery shopping and pick up some new paint brushes and whatever else might catch my eye at the art supply store.  You know all of those pretty pots of color are so tempting;)

messy workspace
This is my very messy workspace.  Can you believe that mess?  It's no wonder I end up wearing as much paint as I put down!  And of course I have a million different things going; that is so while one piece is drying, I can work on another, and just keep going 'round.  I have my next flower and bee painting, another little box, the tp rolls, and a pile of these little cards I'm randomly painting and collaging as the mood strikes me.  I wonder what they'll be.

wip larkspur
This is where I've gotten to on this piece.  I am close to finishing, just need to keep building up detail on the flowers and touch up the bees a little.  I tried using the Caran d'Ache water soluble crayons on the larkspur.  I just can't get the control I want, so I'm adding acrylics in there too.  I really love the effects Diane at My Art Journal gets when she uses them.  I'm trying to talk her into doing a tutorial to teach the rest of us.

I've been having the urge to get back into oil painting, so I went out and picked up a canvas drop cloth to protect my pretty hardwood floors.  I have a tendency to knock over jars of turpentine, and dribble paint all over the place.  There is an irony for me in oil painting, in that although I find oils are easier to manipulate, offer better control, and they are much more forgiving, they just seem like such a serious medium.  When I'm painting with oils I feel like I have to follow all of these rules handed down from the art department and I am more afraid to experiment.  That is why I've been using acrylics; to me they are a more playful medium.  And they lend themselves so well to mixed media and experimenting.

I'm burnin' daylight here; better run!

  2. See, the brilliant thing about being an artist is you can make your OWN sunshine! Hope things are getting a little brighter down there for you guys. Happy Solstice...(it's 58 and raining up here, haha)

  4. Oooh, love that mess. About the crayons--you just have to keep fooling around with them. To get more control, I like to wet my paint brush and apply it to the crayon itself (and then paint with the color that's just on my brush)--that way you don't have all of thed color spread on the surface yet--just on the brush. And also, since their soluble, everytime you go over them, the colors will smear--I always spay a fixative on them when I'm finished. But mostly, you just have to practice with them. I know this doesn't help much--I think a video probably would be better. I don't think I could put myself on video :)
