Pantry Game

I'm feeling guilty; I've lured you here under false pretenses, telling you I have a fun game for you, when really I'm trying to take advantage of your good nature.

Do you ever listen to The Splendid Table?  I get a kick out of the segment where people call in and tell Lynn Rosetto Kasper what they have in their fridge and she tells them what to cook from it.  That's what we're going to do here!

balsamic
A couple weeks ago, DH and I went to Tony Caputo's, one of our favorite places to drop a butt load of cash.  We don't go very often, for that very reason.  But it is where we stock up on things like balsamic vinegar, olive oil, chocolate, and neat little goodies in tins.  This last time we went, I was absolutely certain that we were out of balsamic.   When, at home, I was putting the new bottle in the pantry, I discovered a brand new, unopened bottle of the same stuff.  Actually, we were out of red wine vinegar.   That is when I decided it was time to clean out the pantry and see just what else might be lurking in the shadows.

This came off the baking shelf.  I have whole wheat, buckwheat, quinoa, spelt, rice, and rye flours, a couple different brands of cocoa powder, peanuts, hazelnuts, coconut, meringue powder, a tube of marzipan, some raisins, a few dried apricots, and a jar of cocoa-fig spread.

On the beans and grains and stuff in jars shelf I found brown lentils, black lentils, pinto beans, black beans, flagolet beans, sun dried tomatoes, cacao beans, quinoa, almonds, dates, more coconut, smoked oysters, anchovies, polenta, rice, sprouting seeds, bulgar wheat, multi-grain hot cereal, steel cut oats, Thai noodles, and mulligatawny soup mix.

Then on the stuff in bottles shelf there were molasses, rice wine vinegar, kewra water, sesame oil, tomato paste, piquillo peppers, dried mushrooms bonito seasoning, chana masala, vegetable oil, balsamic (2 bottles), olive oil, grapeseed oil, apple cider vinegar, maple syrup, agave nectar, a bit of honey, espresso powder, onion marmalade (DH made us get that), white wine vinegar, sherry vinegar, and quince - apple fruit spread for cheese.

This doesn't even include the spice overflow shelf for spices that don't fit in the spice cabinet, or the tea shelf!

So here is your part, if you had these things in your pantry, what would you cook?  On the Splendid Table show, the rule is Lynn Rossetto Kasper has to come up with a recipe using only the listed ingredients; I won't hold you to that!

  1. I'll be honest. You have Waaaay better stuff in your pantry than mine! I kept looking for the macaroni and velveeta cheese! But if I had to do something, I would throw all the lentils and beans in a pot, maybe add some sun dried tomatoes, garlic and basil and call it bean soup! Yummy!

  2. If I had all that stuff in my pantry, I would think that I was in someone else's kitchen........
