I found something really cool at the garden store the other day. They are potato bags! I had originally planned to grow my potatoes using this method, but when I saw these bags on the internet recently, I thought they might suit me better. Me being the only potato eater in the house, I really don't need a 40 gallon container of them! Even if it is a cool idea. Actually, come to think of it, I probably could eat 40 gallons of potatoes.
With these, the basic idea is the same, you put some soil in the bottom, add your spuds, then cover them with more soil, and keep adding soil as they grow. With the bags though, they have these handy little doors on the side that you stick your hand through to get yer taters!
I did have some trouble putting the plastic strip through the top. I do not have strong hands. I do have arthritis, and I am seriously double jointed in the hands. The harder I push, the farther back my joints bend. I was going to take a picture of that to show you, but I didn't want to scare you. Oh alright, I was fine with scaring you. I just forgot.
Anyway, I just cut a couple holes in the bag and slid the plastic through. I only did one bag. I decided I'll get DH to do the other one. I was going to plant these now, but I just realized that I'm missing a bag of poo. Um...err....compost.
I have blue potatoes and yukon golds. Blue potatoes are pretty:)
Good things are happening in the garden. The spinach is coming up.
I have no idea what this is. I found it in the flower bed. It resembles chives, but there are black seed pods on the end of some shoots. I don't remember planting this. It could be grape hyacinth. Any ideas?
I added to my secret garden I'm creating.
I found this footprint in my new garden bed. It's not mine, and DH doesn't go back there. Last year I used to find footprints in the soil too. That makes me really uncomfortable, especially because we have a high fence all around the yard. Someone is jumping it. I'm tempted to set some boobie traps.
It looks like my tulips are going to bloom this year. These guys are so pretty! A beautiful, deep red, and tall!
Better rush! I have a reef meeting to get to! Have a glorious weekend!
**Edit** The bags are Grow It Potato Tubs. I got mine at Millcreek Gardens here in Salt Lake. They are also available online. I do encourage you to shop local; it's good for your community:)

Fun!! I just read about those bags the other day, they are brilliant :). (and thanks for the linky love!)
ReplyDeleteMaybe the footprint belongs to the garden fairy.
ReplyDeleteNo?
The potato bags look pretty cool.
I think I could eat 40 pounds of potatoes, too.
Especially blue ones.
