I've decided that I absolutely must make time each week for practicing my photography skills. I've found lately that I'm having trouble getting sharp, clear pictures. Part of that, I fear, is that I'm just not facing some of the realities of getting older, namely having to wear my darn glasses for more than just crocheting and driving at night. It's bad enough that I have to deal with these darn old lady hairs on my chinny chin chin!
I decided to practice with this pretty package I got in the mail recently. It came all the way from France. One day I was playing around on Etsy and saw this beautiful shop, French Gypsy, in one of the treasuries. Sometimes you just have to treat yourself.
So I did:) Look at this lovely packaging!
These sweet sugar tongs were inside. Do I really need sugar tongs? No, but they're pretty! Maybe I can use them to yank the old lady hairs!
Which of these last two pictures do you think is best, compositionally, etc? The skills I'm working on are composition, lighting, white balance, and that focus thing. I actually spent the time to read the camera manual and figure out how to manually adjust the white balance on the camera instead of relying on photoshop. It wasn't so hard. I think I can get used to doing that extra step.
Oh boy! I have a full day and already I'm behind schedule. My goal for this week (or one of them!) is to stick to my daily schedule. Wish me luck on that!
Such pretty tongs!
ReplyDeleteI prefer the first picture- the tighter crop highlights the use of the item, and makes the picture more exciting. I like the composition, with the angle of the leading line directing us to the sugar cube. The picture is grey, but it's grey in a good way- nice and moody, with good side lighting, which really suits the antique-ness of the tongs and plate, plus brings out the detail work of the flowers. In the first picture, the sugar is just a bit brighter too, which really saves the picture from looking drab on a what was probably a cloudy day! (Or, at least that's what my shots look like when it's cloudy outside, but I'm near a sunny window.) The sugar cube is in a sweet spot, too, at an intersection of two "thirds" lines.
one word. trifocals!
ReplyDelete(i like the first photo better, too.)
Myrnie, I love that explanation. The elements you point out are things that I "know" but when it comes time to set up the picture, my mind just goes completely blank, and I end up doing it intuitively. Sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. I'm trying to train myself to actually, consciously think about all of those elements!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, it was another cloudy, rainy day:(
Karen, I have progressive lenses; is that the same thing as trifocals? Whatever they are, I don't like wearing them:)
I like the first photo. And the tongs are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteCan I vote for both?
ReplyDeleteI like some elements of each photo....
My first thought was that I liked photo #2 best, but everybody else liked #1....so, of course, then I started to doubt my initial response.
The story of my life.
I adore your French tongs!
I hate old lady chin hair.
And I can't see much of anything either.....
I like the second photo, even though it's not as sharp as the first one. I agree with Myrnie that the first one is cropped nicely and you can see the detail better but in this case I prefer the shot with the whole tongs visible, since they are so pretty!
ReplyDeleteHave fun with with your camera....
you could make those tongs into 2 beautiful rings!!
ReplyDeleteI like the second photo best, though I'm sure it depends what you're looking for.
ReplyDeleteI like that the flowers on the ends of the tongs are in focus and that the handle goes out of focus. It also looks like they have more character, standing there on the dish waiting to pick something up...
Nice photos! - and it's amazing that you're willing to ask for random peoples' opinions on them.
