Monday - In the Studio

cat and crow
Here I am back with some very slow progress on my crows!  It's been hard to find studio time lately; I'm hoping this week will be better.  So this is where I am on Joker Crow #2.  Rose the Six-Toed-Cat thought she'd give her opinion.   She says that the blue star under the bird's bottom makes it look like he's pooping.  What do you think?  Should I get rid of it?  Or is that just Rose being rude?

My goal with this one, if you remember, was to not use any paint on the crow.  Well I tried really hard and did well until the end.  An issue I come up against again and again with drawing is trying to get those dark darks and the bright highlights.  I always hang out in mid-tone land.  So I was trying my hardest to push this one, holding that pencil down as hard as I could to get the dark tones.   I struggled with the highlights.  I tried my white charcoal pencil, but it wouldn't even leave a mark on top of the slick graphite.  I tried scratching out lines with an x-acto  knife.  That worked some, but not good enough.  So I did succumb to the paint brush and added just a couple dabs of white gesso.

And this is what I ended up with.  It's kind of hard to tell the difference in the photographs.  I also added a few more scratchy graphite lines under the bird, and some hardware elements that double as a hanging apparatus!

Well I am off to the post office!  Ttfn:)

  1. I can't put my finger on the exact reason why, but the crows really speak to me in your recent works. I love it! Great job.

  2. I like! Reminds me of Mr. Burns, though.
