As I predicted on Friday, I have no new art to show you. I did not, after all, spend the weekend in the garden, but I did go to the Wasatch Garden plant sale early Saturday morning. They told us that these plants haven't been hardened off yet, so we should spend the week attending to that, then plant next weekend. The remainder of my weekend was spent lounging about, reading, going out for sushi, playing Scrabble on the patio with DH, and getting some pleasant and unexpected Mother's Day greetings, from children I've given birth to and others I've "adopted". It was a good weekend:)
Let me introduce you to my new green friends! I like to think of them as future ratatouille, caponata, eggplant parmesan, baba ganoush, pesto, salsa, and so many other summer garden dishes. I love the Wasatch plant sale, because they focus on heirloom varieties, some interesting tomatoes and peppers that I've never imagined before. I ended up with four more tomato plants than I meant to get, but at $2 a piece and such variety, I couldn't pass them up. I found Cherokee Purple, orange Kellogs Breakfast and Juane Flamme, yellow Dagma's Perfection, red Cour di Bue and Burbank slicing tomatoes. I got small yellow pear tomatoes, huge Brandywines, and all sorts in between.
As for peppers I picked up Black Hungarian, dark brown Pasilla Bajio, red Corno di Torro, Buran and Napolean Sweet. And I couldn't pass on the Anaheims and jalapeños. I chose two eggplants, Pintung Long and a more rounded Rosa Bianca. I figured that was enough eggplant, since DH starts to turn green at all the eggplant dishes I try to feed him in the summer. Myself, I don't get tired of it until the end of the summer and the last fruits are coming off the vine.
It is always so wonderful to see the crowds that come out for this plant sale. It makes me happy and hopeful that so many people are choosing to grow their own produce. I believe it is an important step towards sustainability and a healthier Earth full of healthy people. I can't wait to get these guys in the ground, but since they're predicting another possible freeze on Wednesday, I will be patient and just take them outside for some fresh air each day. And more important, I will remember to bring them in at night!
Hope your week is getting off to a luscious start:)
Ooo...exciting! I've been trying to plant some goodies as well, all container gardening through since we don't have any other space!
ReplyDeleteOh, I really admire garden artists such as yourself--I do not have a green thumb, although I used to, but it's turned black with age. I LOVE fresh garden vegetables!
ReplyDeleteLovely, lovely garden plans! Can't wait to watch your veggies grow :)
