Ever since I was a kid, I've loved visiting novelty tourist attractions and local claims to fame that can be found in small towns across this country, and I imagine across the planet. I'm talking about everything from giant balls of string, to *world* famous pie, strawberry festivals and outlaw grave sites. DH and I have been talking about hitting some of these spots across Utah this summer with some day and weekend trips. By complete serendipity, we started Friday!
We were on our way up to Logan to liberate my paintings from the boutique they've been in up there, and we got to talking about our "weird Utah" adventure plans. I pulled out the smart phone and started searching, just in case there was something to see on this trip. And there was! We found this world's largest fishing fly in Logan, right by the side of the road. Weighing in at over 3 tons and 32 feet long, it is indeed meant for a big fish. Maybe some of those giant whales of the Great Salt Lake I've heard of;)
DH has long told me about a spot he and his family used to stop at for dinner when he was a kid, traveling through Utah. And again - serendipity - we found ourselves driving past it, as we took the backroads home.
I must give a disclaimer here: the rest of this post is unhealthy, except the well water. If you continue, you risk raising your cholesterol and going into a carb/sugar coma. Don't say I didn't warn you. We had to stop here though, it being such a fond memory from his childhood, plus they have famous pie.
Another draw is apparently their well water. I was expecting that iron taste I remembered from my grandparents' well from my own childhood. Nah. It was good water though. Much better than the chemical flavor of our tap water.
Their homemade rolls were amazing. More so with the raspberry butter. Northern Utah is known for delicious raspberries. I would have been completely happy with just this and the water. Well....several of these and the water.
But I ordered chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. There was a salad, but I guess I must have eaten it before I got a photo.
DH got the prime rib. Such presentation!
Since they have famous pie, and that being the highlight of DH's childhood memory, we had to get some! A disappointment actually. Why do restaurants have to put so much sugar in their desserts so all you can taste is sugar? We couldn't even eat more than a few bites. I have to stop ordering pie in restaurants. It never tastes like I think it should. I should have stuck with the rolls.
So that is my first installment this season of "Weird Utah". I hope to share lots of fun and amusing spots with you over the spring and summer.
Here are some of my past Weird Utah posts:

Hope your week is getting off to a good start!

I needed this laugh this morning :) I have NEVER had better bread than I did when I visited Utah....yumm :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I love hearing about this kind of stuff!
ReplyDeleteI think maybe that huge fly was meant for the *World's Largest* Fish monuments they have in several Minnesota towns.
I would have pulled over just to see that sputnik sign!
And then to find out they had food!
Double treat.
Can't wait for the next installment!
Oh wow! I am drooling. Raspberry butter?! Yummy
ReplyDeleteThanks for the laugh take care xox
Yes, the raspberry butter at Maddox is the best. Funny, I agree with the pie. But rolls - yum!! I also like their salad dressing - a french sort of thing.
