What?? Can someone tell me?
In anticipation of someday being able to sit outside on my patio, with the soft summer breezes flowing, I'm making a bunting. I had the oddest moment when I was pulling these fabric pieces out of their box.
When I was a kid, I used to love to play in the basement. It was nice and cool down there in the hot, muggy summers. And it was just the right amount of creepy too! Opening boxes in that basement, there was a particular odor. It was like the long lost past floating up from the box. I associated that smell with times from long long ago and really old people that those things must have belonged to.
As I was ironing these fabric squares that I pulled from my own basement, that same smell wafted up to my nose. It was so strange to connect that smell to something I myself had packed away in a box in the basement. I was suddenly struck with the feeling that I am one of those really old people from a long long time ago! Now, I know I'm not that ancient, but there are days. And the truth is, these fabric scraps are only about ten years old. But such a weird feeling.
So anyway, I had these 8 inch squares already cut from a project that never quite happened. I pulled out some more recent fabric and cut some more. I gathered up scraps of fabric, ribbon, embroidery floss, and crochet cotton. I wanted this to be a quiet, slow cloth kind of project, so no sewing machines, just me and my needle. I folded the squares in half and ironed them, then sewed along the raw edges, leaving the raw edges there for everyone to see.
Each triangle I'm embellishing with bits of ribbon, crochet border, embroidery, cut out bits of flower motifs from the fabric scraps. When I have enough, I'm going to sew them all to a long piece of wide bias binding tape I have. I'll show you the results when I'm all done. I'm hoping by the time I finish that real spring will be here instead of this pretend spring!
Happy weekend everyone!

I've mentioned how much I love the colors you pick, right? OK, good :)

ReplyDeleteApril snow brings May Go-Go-Glow!
Don't worry... spring is coming! It has to be! I have flowers on my patio, but it is so cold and wet still I have to enjoy them through the window most days.
ReplyDeleteWe got some snow too, about a foot. Loving the fabrics.
ReplyDeleteOooo! That bunting is looking pretty groovy!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see it done.
And I sure get the all of a sudden realizing you are one of the old, old people......
Just this week I got asked at the thrift shop if I was old enough for the senior citizen discount.
I didn't know whether to be offended or just thrilled to get the discount...........
