Reusable Bowl Covers for a Green Kitchen

or....
On not following instructions and throwing a tantrum
Do you ever have one of those days where you just don't seem to fit into your own skin?  Where everything you try to do is fumbled?  That is where I am today.  I'm going to blame it on the snow that is preventing me from playing in the dirt like I want to be.

Anyway, I found this really cool tutorial for making reusable bowl covers.  I dislike using plastic wrap in the kitchen; it just seems so wasteful, and I got excited when I found this.   I'm not going to give you my version of the instructions, because to be honest I didn't read the tutorial.  I just looked at the picture and said, "oh! great idea; I'll do that!"  Which may also account for my less than stellar results.  eh-hum.

The tutorial calls for using cloth backed plastic; I found this plain plastic picnic tablecloth for a couple dollars at the thrift store.  I liked the plain plastic better, because it seems like it will be easier to clean, not necessarily easier to sew I found out!   I chose a variety of bowl sizes and traced around them on the back of the plastic.

I don't have pinking shears, so I used these craft scissors.  It worked out well, but I don't believe they would cut the cloth backed plastic.

I cut out way more circles than I ended up sewing (due to my tantrum).  Sewing the plastic was....well...obnoxious I think is a good word for it.  The one part of the tute that I did read said to pull the elastic tight, that means - really - pull it tight, so that you get a good tight fitting cover.  Well, the plastic was slippery and didn't want to feed through the machine; I was pulling on the back end to get it to feed, and pulling the elastic on the front end.

So this wasn't a really bliss inspiring activity for me today.  That said, I do like my covers that I ended up with!  And it's going to be way better than putting more plastic wrap in the landfills, right?  When I'm feeling more stable I will attempt to sew the rest:)

  1. Excellent, Bobbi--I love them, and you poor thing--you still have snow?! I hate to say this, but I was sitting out in the sun today--it's in the 70's here. You'll be getting this warm weather--I know you will ;)

  3. What a great idea! I'm always looking for new ways to reduce my pastic consumption. Plastic tables cloths can come in pretty prints and colors. I'll be checking out the dollar store next time I'm there!
