Home Again Home Again

Ahh, here I am back in Salt Lake. Air travel is so surreal. From the airport in one city, you walk down a hallway, take a seat. Then in a few hours, you get up, walk down another hallway, and exit into a completely different city.

We ended up staying one more day. DH had to run to New Jersey for an early Wednesday morning meeting, so we drove there Tuesday night. Then we spent yesterday driving back to Manhattan, dropping off the rental, and hanging out at the airport for hours.

I did enjoy this trip to Manhattan. I didn't have it quite as orchestrated in my head as the spring trip. That trip was all about museums and theater. This time I just wanted to wander around and absorb the place through my pores. Tuesday I took my time getting myself together in the morning, and checking out of the hotel. I was really tired from the miles and miles I had walked Sunday and Monday; I knew it was going to be a subway day. I set out on 6th avenue, jumped on the subway up to 42nd street. I wandered around Bryant Park for awhile, sat and watched this adorable little boy in the bestest ever yellow galoshes running around.

I checked out the library for a bit, had some lunch at the 'wichcraft stand. In Bryant Park the library has set up reading areas, with racks of books that you can sit and read. I thought that was very cool.

After my pastrami sandwich, I walked east on 42nd, aiming for Grand Central Station. As I was crossing Fifth Avenue, there was suddenly this mass of people, it seemed like they just appeared from nowhere. Here were the throngs I had heard so much about, but had yet to see! It was a great adrenaline rush. An intravenous injection of New York!

And then I saw Grand Central. It was amazing. I swear I hear a choir of angels singing. I did have a little orgasm when I went inside, all the people rushing back and forth, trains leaving to all points. It was like the hub of the world. And the architecture! Swoon!

I am trying a little experiment; I want to somehow relate this day to you in the way that I experienced it. I've inserted a little slideshow. It would be best if I could make it go slow at some points and speed up at others, but alas. So, to assist you in sharing my experience, please gather together the following items: car exhaust, pizza, urine, perfume, caramel corn, cigarette smoke, coffee. Randomly smell these different items while you watch the slide show.

  2. LOL! I wish I could have really attached aroma-rama! I wanted to attach a sound clip of NYC, but it was taking too long to find just the right thing, so had to hit publish:)
